Dancing down the Heavens ladder, Pirouetting through the spheres, Once a gay Angel descended Laughing, yet amidst hot tears. Past Orion and the shining Galaxy she sped like lightning, Dancing, dancing all the time... Yet as the Earth leemed beneath her, She grew sadder - and yet sweeter Seemed on her the earthly charm... "Go thou not, my dancing fairy, Earth is not for thee, nor flesh!" Thus the Most High spoke before she Started on her downward dash. All in vain! The angel, dancing, Through the spheres, with closed eyes, glancing Neither to the left, nor right, Tiptoed past the purple-clouded Skyway till she came to crowded Crossing where she sаw no light... What she saw was sadly marching Mournful spirits endless row, As they moved toward the Earth, which Loomed immensely large below. And the Fairies' joyous singing, And her dancing, and her springing Ceased, for now the Guide of Birth Made her join the sad procession On its way to self-perfection And attornment on the Earth... Born at last - she was a wonder For she still danced fairy-like, Just as if she had no body Fluttering and airy light... All men felt her fire flaming: When they went near - it was waning, When they left - it burned again! For this Fire, comes from higher, Just a common sex-admirer Would have tried to grasp in vain... Earthly life and earthly sorrows, Little space to dance and fly, And sham-fiery, false temptations, Could not make her fire die... Once the Queen of Temple-dancers, Hearken that my heart my answers To your all-embracing flame: Change it into a sweet, gentle Altar fire in a temple: And be worshipped thus thy name!.. "Look to me, my dancing fairy, Earth is not for thee, nor flesh..." Thus the Most High spoke before she Through of a new skyward dash... "Hurry not!" - then God said gently, "Stay awhile yet, days in plenty, Hast thou still to come to me!.. Be thy Fire a bright-burning Altar-light of Love, when turning Souls of men to Me through thee!.." Dancing up the Heavens ladder, Pirouetting through the spheres, One day Fire Queen ascended Laughing and - for joy - in tears... Past Orion and the shining Milky Way she sped like lightning, Dancing, dancing all the time... And as the stars flashed to greet her, She grew gayer - and yet sweeter Seemed on her the Heavens charm... | ||
